I finally surrendered my old Apple ][e to the Ox Mountain Sanitary Landfill this past weekend. It was my first computer, and really still in my opinion the perfect computer for a 5th grader. I could pop off the kid friendly lid, and see the cpu, registers, slots (yay slot 3!) etc. to really learn how things worked. My old school, Mesa Elementary, had a couple on the way to my classroom, and I got hooked on the lemonade game. Eventually, I wanted to hack the game to say ruder things, have tornados, and other randomness — and so began my life’s adventures in programming. The ][e was the kind of computer where you could learn almost anything about it. There was Basic (and those magic PEEKs and POKEs), there was easy access to the assembler (JMP sounded perfect in 1984). There were those 5.25 inch floppy disks you could make double sided with a hole puncher. There was aquatron, logo, beagle brothers, karateka, ultima … GOOD TIMES! When the movie War Games came out, I remember having my boot program emulate the WOPR: Greetings, Professor Falken. Would you like to play a game?
